Year One - Nora Roberts | a new direction for the author + I'm not sure what to think about this story set in an apocalyptic world

Year One
"an epic, apocalyptic tale of good and evil, love and loss."
#1 in Chronicles of the One
With one drop of blood, the old world is gone for ever.
And in its place, something extraordinary begins...
They call it The Doom - a deadly pandemic that starts on a cold New Year's Eve in the Scottish countryside. There's something mysterious about the virus and the way it spreads. As billions fall sick and die, some survivors find themselves invested with strange, unexpected abilities. ...
A tale of terror and magick in a brand new world. (link to the quotes)
in the last years Nora Roberts has published a certain set of books each year
two romantic suspense books in the In Death series
one romantic suspense stand-alone
and two books belonging to a paranormal or contemporary romance series
in the last years the three romantic suspense books have been my favourites
mainly because the last romance series were mostly paranormal romances
and they don't work for me as well as contemporary romances
plus some of the paranormal romances started to be a bit too similar too each other
that's why I was actually pretty excited to read
that Nora Roberts would try something new
that her next series would be set in a apocalyptic world
that there would be some dystopian elements in the story
but I was also a bit nervous about this new direction
because my struggles with novels like that are well documented
last week I finally read my copy of "The One"
and I'm honestly not sure what to think about the story
some elements, like most of the characters, worked for me
others, like some plot developments, didn't
I was also hoping for a stronger focus on the world building
when I think of books with a brilliant world building
stories like the Others novels by Anne Bishop come to my mind
and compared to those books
"The One" was not as strong
even though as a whole I enjoyed the novel
it once again became clear to me
that contemporary romances by Nora Roberts have a special place in my heart
contemporary romances in general
and that books with special elements often don't have the same impact on me.

it would love to hear what other readers think of "The One"
was it like a breath of fresh air for you?
did you have a good reading experience?

  1. New to me totally. I enjoyed the post.

  2. I've seen this around and I'm quite intrigued! Somehow I've never read anything by Nora Roberts (shocking, I know) so this may be my first one. The characters sound promising but I'll admit that I'm a bit disappointed to hear about the lacklustre world building!
