Sleeping Giants - Sylvain Neuvel (something different)

Science Fiction
#1 in the Themis Files
as a child Rose discovered a giant artifact
as a adult she tries to discover its secret
its potential
and its danger
what she finds out
will change everything
after finishing the "Sleeping Giants"
I have pretty mixed thoughts and emotions
I loved the first half of the story
learning more of the artifact(s)
was exciting
and I enjoyed reading about Rose
I also liked the different text formats
for example journal entries and interviews / interrogation protocols
after the first half
the focus of the story shifted a bit
less SciFi
more political power plays
more secrets and intrigues
that's something I struggled with
other characters besides Rose
were concentrated on
some I enjoyed reading about
others I didn't
the stories of some even annoyed me
and I wondered
why the story was so focused on North America
plus the slight romance element didn't work for me
without the romance
things would have been better
and yes, it's shocking that I'm saying something like that
so yeah, some things were great for me
others not
the ending left me with some major question marks
about the logic of what was going on
right now I'm not completely sure
if I will go on with book #2 - Waking Gods -
or not.

  1. I've had this one on my to-read list for a bit and I am curious about it. I'm a huge scifi fan so it seems I would like it. I haven't decided yet. Great review!

    1. If you like SciFi then this book could be great for you, even though I have to say that a stronger focus on the SciFi aspects would have been great.

      Happy Reading!

  2. Interesting review. I own this book. It’s been sitting on my TBR shelf for months, waiting for me to find the motivation to pick it up.
