Ink and Bone - Rachel Caine

#1 in the Great Library series
fantasy  / alternate history YA
a world in which owning books privately is a crime
smuggling them is a lucrative business
Jess is forced to do it
because his father is in the business
when Jess gets the chance to become a scholar
he feels like he could make this work
he loves books
and knowledge
but he soon realizes
that his new life is just as complicated and dangerous as his old one
he finds friends
but will this be enough to survive?
I loved the sound of the story
knew from other books that the author's writing style would work for me
but soon realized after starting the book
that the world building didn't appeal to me
some details just didn't work
didn't make that much sense
for example the process of book smuggling
I think many readers will love the world
make sure to read an excerpt to get a first impression of the world building
but something bothered me about it
I won't go on with the series.

  1. I do have this one on my shelves and I am sorry it did not work for you. I am afraid I will have trouble liking a male main character.

    1. I'm hopeful that you will like the book, lately I have been pretty critical about little things.

      Happy Reading!

  2. Aww, so sorry to hear you didn't quite enjoy this one. It's on my shelf, and now I am, weirdly, even more curious to read it to see if I'll enjoy it more.

    1. I'm sure that you will enjoy the book, I got annoyed by some things other readers might not mind at all. I actually think that most readers will have a good time with the story and appreciate it more than I did.

      Happy Reading!
