Today I'm taking part in the Paranormals blog tour, this tour is about the unique books by JL Bryan.
To bring you the world of the Paranormals a bit closer, JL Bryan wrote a very interesting journal entry.

(Esmeralda is one of the paranormals in Tommy Nightmare and Alexander Death. Her touch enables her to access the memories of the dead. She generally keeps her necromantic power to herself.)
- from the journal of Esmeralda Medina Rios, age 15
(I am writing this page in English so my mother can’t read it.)
I took out the coin he gave me to look at it again. It’s in my palm now. Gold has such a strange weight in your hand. The texture is unnaturally smooth, and it really does seem to glow in the light. A gold coin is like something from another world, one where they might have pirates and dragons.
The coin is strange, too, because it shows an Indian man in a headdress on the front, and an eagle on the back. I guess they didn’t put presidents’ faces on coins back then. I wonder when they started doing that? The year on this coin is 1911. It says “2½ dollars.” Strange to think gold could be worth so little.
Of course the coin makes me think of him. His eyes were haunting, deep and gray, a very unusual color. His touch...I’m shaking. He made me feel scared and so alive. There are no other boys like that. I think he is something like me, and there aren’t many like me. Maybe he is the only one.
I remember the night three years ago. I want to write about it just one more time, so maybe it will be behind me. I don’t think it will, though.
My mother took me out to that ugly farm in Oklahoma where the couple and their foster kids lived. The man’s father had just died. His wife had us sneak out to their farm late at night. The man’s father was in a plain coffin, in this creepy barn that was somehow also a church. They were strange people.
The woman knew the dead old man had money hidden somewhere on the farm. My mother made me touch his corpse and listen until I learned where it was. I ended up waiting alone in another barn while the woman went into the house to find a key.
Then I wasn’t alone. He was there, and I remember how he touched my hand and it terrified me. But I didn’t want to run away from him. He was one of their foster kids, and he was my age. He had gone into the house ahead of the woman, he already had the key, and he took the dead old man’s money. He gave me some of it. And this coin, this strange coin.
He was running away from his foster family that night. Before he did, he kissed me. My first kiss. And it was so unexpected, and scary, and thrilling. I wish he’d kissed me longer, or kissed me another time before he left. But then he was gone. He left me only the golden coin to remember him. And that golden kiss. I’ve tried kissing other boys, but it is no good.
When I recovered from my fear the next day, I felt more courage than ever before. I began to think, I will tell my mother I can no longer read the dead, and then she will stop making me do these awful things for awful people. And now she doesn’t make me do them anymore, because she thinks I lost the ability. I would have been too afraid to lie to her before that. But that boy changed something in me...
I don’t know why I still think about him and have dreams about him. It is not right that I should feel so much when I can do nothing about it. I pray that I will find him again. But I don’t know if prayer helps when it comes to love.
While Fallen Oak recovers from the Jenny pox, someone new is hunting Jenny.
Like Jenny, Ashleigh Goodling belonged to a pair of opposites with powers that mirror each other.
Now Jenny and Seth must face the opposite of love…
J.L. Bryan studied English literature at the University of Georgia and at Oxford, with a focus on English Renaissance and Romantic literature. He also studied screenwriting at UCLA. He lives in Atlanta with his wife Christina, dogs Violet and Tiger Lily, and cats Shadow and Sue.
