Jillian Hart is happy. She has a wonderful home, great new friends, three adorable cats and her quilt-making business is doing great. After being involved in a murder investigation a while ago she is hoping for a life without any mysteries. But when a weird professor is killed and dozens of malnourished cats need help Jillian can't stay back. Once again she is in the middle of a murder investigation and a suprise visit from her stepdaughter complicates things further.
Will Jillian be able to help solve the mystery and will she and her stepdaughter Kara finally manage to get closer?

I enjoyed the first book in this series a lot and "The cat, the professor and the poison" was just as good. I loved meeting Jillian, her three adorable cats and the other characters again. I felt like I was revisiting old friends and enjoyed being part of their lifes again.

It was fascinating to learn more about Jillian's life and I loved that she is so happy in her new home. I also liked that the possible relationship between Jillian and her friend Tom develops slowly because everything else wouldn't fit to the characters and the story. I appreciate that Leann Sweeney gives her characters time to build new relationships and to change. The relationship between Kara and Jillian was fascinating and at the end heart-warming. I'm happy that Kara will stay near Jillian and that they can continue to be there for each other.
I also enjoyed reading all the scenes that included Jillian's adorable cats. I love cats myself so I like reading about their quirkiness and stubbornness. The scenes involving the cats made me laugh and smile a lot.
The mystery part of the story was interesting and not so easy to solve.

I love the cover, it's cute and thrilling at the same time. And of course I adore the cats on it.

final appraisal
Books like this one are the reason why I love to read cozy msteries. The mystery is fascinating and interesting, the characters are very likable and the cats are just adorable. I will definitely continue with this series because it's a great one and reading the books is like visiting old , dear friends.
I would recommend this book to all fans of relaxed cozy mysteries and if you like animals (especially cats) it's a plus but not a must.

Cats in trouble mystery
1. The cat, the quilt and the corpse
2. The cat, the professor and the poison
3. The cat, the lady and the liar

  1. I have read the first two books as well. I pre-ordered book 3 and it is on my Nook, but I haven't read it yet. Have a wonderful week, Sabrina.....

  2. I love cozy mysteries but don't get to read as many as I'd like to. This sounds like a good one to add to the list!

  3. I read this one last week and enjoyed it. Did you also have a feeling in the first half of the book, that Kara was up to something, that she had an ulterior motive for coming? She sure took over the house and did whatever she wanted without regard to Jillian.

  4. I love cozy mysteries with cats! I'm going to put this one on my wishlist!

  5. Julie P: Hope you enjoy the book just as much as I did.

Stephanie: Hope you get a chance to read the book (or the first in the series) soon.

Aurian: Not really. I thought that at the beginning Kara was unsure about herself and her relationship with Jillian and that's why she acted the way she did.

The Mistress of the dark: Ditto, I love cozy mysteries with cats.
