Let's compare our TBR piles

Lately I have been thinking a lot about my TBR (to be read) pile and realized that I need to reduce it. So in the next weeks I plan to buy less new books and read more from the ones I already own. Or sort out those that I'm just not interested in reading.

For a long time a big TBR pile felt great to me because I knew that I had always a lot of books to choose from at home. But lately thinking about the number of books to-be-read makes me feel tense. Some books have been in the pile for years and it's finally time for them to be read or sorted out.

I have several TBR piles in my sleeping room and all together 80 books are waiting to be read (will try to take some pics later and add them). Next month at the same time I hope to be down to 60 (less would be better). I will then do a new post and hopefully have some good news (meaning less books in my TBR pile) to share.

Question of the week
I hope you will share the size of your TBR pile with me.  So, it's time to confess, how many books are in your pile? Are you happy with the size or do you also want to reduce it?

And let's meet back in a month to see if we managed to read some books of our TBR piles.

  1. Well my TBR has at most 20 books, i try to keep it below 20 because then i don't feel too overwhelmed about all the books i have to read. If it gets to be more than that I sort the books out and prioratize which ones i should read next (usually review books). It works pretty well for me because i'm a fast reader for the most part. :)

  2. I have 21 middle grades books on my TBR list at school but have 92 personal books. Quite a few of those are free Kindle downloads, so I'm not feeling super pushed to read them. I hate the TBR pile, it stresses me out also. I'm trying hard not to purchase books, but a lot of my pre-orders have been coming in in the last 3 months so I've not been tackling the TBR books. I'm going on vactionin a few weeks, and since I can't sleep on planes I'm hoping to work my way through a few books.

  3. I've got 7 books there now ... and I'm actually quite happy about it. But then, I've been working on reducing it for some months now. LOL.

  4. I got 86 at the moment... It's kind of overwhelming and I'm trying to cut back on buying books, but, well, let's say it's not really working (I have two more that should fall in my mailbox sometime soon).
I'm not even counting the free downloads for my ereader or the galleys I also need to read.

  5. Uhhh, well, MY GR TBR list has only ebooks that I own or have borrowed on it... and it has 457 books on it.... I'm hoping to make a dent on but for every one I remove I add two more...

  6. I counted by TBR a couple of weeks ago and it reached 127 physical books and 16 on my kindle...and I've bought a ferw books since then! I really do want to read all the books in the list but I keep getting seduced by shiny new releases. It's gotten worse since I started blogging and now my TBR pile has a bookcase of it's own in my bedroom! I really do need to stop buying and start reading more!

  7. 152 when last counted on March 1st. 3 more since yesterday evening when I met with a friend in a bookcrossing zone. ooops!
I definitely want to reduce my TBR but it´s really hard for me since I got a lot of old romance novels via bookmooch - and I´m stil looking for more...
And then there are all the new books from authors I really like and therefore neeeeed to have. *sigh*

  8. Is it mean to say that I'm happy not to be alone?

I also find new books every day and sometimes I need to have them even though my TBR is so big.
However I will try harder in the next weeks to not buy too many new books.

Gina, I think with 457 you are the winner :)

  9. Well, for my TBR I only count what I actually have sitting on my floor, so mine's at 71 (which is why I'm on a book buying ban for I don't know how long).
It could be better, but I have already read 16 books from it this year and am slowly reading it down.
The long list doesn't bother me, but thinking of where to put all of them when I finish...now that's another story. Good luck reading down your stack.

  10. I say quite often, I must get to that TBR shelf, (now shelves).

I have just over 60 books on my TBR shelves and 4 by the bed.

I did start a 'by the bed' TBR shelf in the hope that these would be read first. LOL

  11. I am actually making a list and going to post it in two piles (kindle and paper) hopefully sometime this next week ---I am calling it a reality check but lets just say well over 100 (and nope not happy about it--I should read what I buy/get)

  12. I think I'm too embarrassed :) My TBR pile pre-blog was probably around 200 (I think I was afraid all bookstores would go out of business I would lose my job and I needed to hoarde. OK, actually it was paperbackswap's fault).

Post-blog I still have all of those plus my review pile so now I am in the 250-300 range. And now I add books to my Kindle as well. I would like to remove some books from my old TBR pile so I will work on this along with you. Good luck!

  13. To be honest, I was afraid to know the number of my to-be-read books, but for the next seven weeks I will buy no new books and because it's interesting to see how my pile will shrink I counted the books and I can't believe it!! There are 94 books waiting to be read *ohmy* I really don't know when and how that happened!!

  14. Well... I just counted them... 256 physical books o.0
    Plus 20ish ebooks.
And I haven't really bought many books in the last months, 10 max maybe. I really need to read faster!

  15. 197 books! I don't have a blog and started entered contests about a year ago. I have them in stacks on the shelves and have begun taking a stack at time to pick from. The pile keeps growing! Lately, I have cut down to only entering contests for historical fiction and mysteries but then there is always a YA or contemporary that sneeks in.

  17. Well, without my ebooks, I've 12 books in my TBR, but with the ebook, I've at the least 50 books. D: This is a little sad x_x'

  18. This is a very good idea. I have 20 books on my tbr pile, including ebooks. Maybe even a bit more. Okay, I need to reduce that too. ;)

  19. Well ladies, you have nothing to be worried about yet! When I discovered English books, I started buying in bulk from secondhand internetshops. And I mean in bulk. Then when I read a book from an author I liked, I just had to have everything by that author. And then the new books keep piling up. I think my stack of unread paperbacks is about 1600, and I do not intend to count the ebooks ...
I keep buying more than I can ever read, and it will be another 26 years or more before I can retire ... or I'll have to win the lottery ...

  20. Goodluck Sabrina because I've been trying to reduce my TBR mountain for a year now and not much luck. The most I achieve is reduce it's rate of growth...

  21. Ugh, let't not. I have too many books, and it keeps on growing. I want to many new books, and even though I read several in a week the pile doesn't not get smaller. And there are a bunch of old books in it too...and very old harlequins

  22. I'm very overwhelmed by my TBR pile at the moment. I only have about 20 that I actually have a copy of but I have at least 50 more that I want. I know exactly how you feel.

  23. I wish my pile was only 80 books. My pile is 250+ and growing it seems everyday!

  24. I just posted about my TBR pile yesterday. I too do a monthly round-up type of thing just so I can see some kind of tangible proof that I'm making a dent. We should put ours together in a ring and have it be a battle to the death. Which pile will eat the other first?

  25. In spite of the fact that I've been on a strict book budget of $50/mo for a full year now, I still somehow have a TBR pile that keeps growing. I haven't actually added it up, but between ebooks and physical books, I've got at least 150 books (yikes) and that doesn't count the 100+ free books that I've downloaded when they were on special at Amazon. Between paperbackswap, bookmooch, and all of the monthly bargain ebooks $50/mo goes a long way.

  26. Mine is currently 16 including the two (one paperback, one ebook) that I currently have on the go). It makes me marginally nervous, but I figure anything under 20 is OK. There are a few I really want to get and I want to see what is new at NetGalley - but I would like to get through a few more from the pile before I get anything new now.
But there are so many I'd love to reread - like the classics that I haven't read for 10+ years...sigh...one day I might pick them up again!

  27. Geez, 80 is ALOT. But reading the comments people have a ton more. I currently have around 40 books in TBR pile xD I don't really mind the size, I'm just worried I'll never read them all because new books are always coming out.

  28. Wow - finally found a review site that I can really relate to. After reading other's posts, I no longer feel like some kind of wierdo for the piles of TBR books all over my room. I go every Tuesday to pick up new ones, and I'm thrilled to know I'm not alone. I have piles of historical romance, contemporary, and then new ones of my favorite authors that come out. Counted 150.Then there's another pile of self-help, like the Suze Orman books too. I love books!

  29. I have two TBR piles...the old ones (in my bedroom),and the newer ones (in my office).

The old ones had 166 books when I started a blog about my journey through my TBR stacks), and now, more than a year later, there are 80 books. I should have made more progress than that, but I've also been working on the newer ones. And I keep adding to the new ones...alas.

I have posted photos of these stacks at various times. My old stacks can be seen in this photo at this blog post (from today):

  30. I have about 20 books that are already purchased on my TBR pile but at least another 30 that I haven't bought yet but are on the pile, too. It's getting a bit out of control. it seems that for every one I read, at least two are added.

  31. More than 100, but I'm not sure how much more. :x Last time I checked it was.. hm, I think 174? But that was months ago x.x
