The Iron Duke by Meljean Brook
published October 2010;  steampunk romance

Ever after Rhys Trahaearn, a former pirate, freed England from the brutal command of the Horde the common people have worshipped him. But Rhys, who's called the Iron Duke, also has many enemies and when a dead body is thrown on his compound Inspector Mina Wentworth is the one to investigate the crime.
Right from the start Rhys is fascinated by Mina and together they try to solve the mystery surrounding the dead body and other weird proceedings. Rhys soon discovers that there is more to Mina than he saw at first glance and even though he spend the last years alone he now wants her more than everything else in life. But Mina is not interested in a relationship that could make her life even harder.
Will they get a chance for a happy end and will they save England from a dangerous and secret society?

After reading "Here there be monsters", the short story which started the Iron Seas series, I had very high expectations and they were definitely surpassed by "The Iron Duke". Everything in this book is just perfect and the combination of the love story, the setting and the thrilling action was great and I honestly enjoyed every sentence.

Especially the characters impressed me. Mina and Rhys are two wonderfully complex and likable characters and their relationship was both sexy and sweet. Mina is a strong and amazing woman who would do everything for the people she loves. Even though her parentage makes her the target of a lot of hate she still is a friendly and sincere person. I loved reading about Rhys and enjoyed that he is still like a pirate. The way he cared about Mina was heart-warming and he is also one very sexy and determined hero.
The other characters are just as great and I can't wait to read more about them in the next book of the series. The thrilling action and especially the setting is fantastic. The more I read about the steampunk world Meljean Brook created the more it feels alive and real to me.
I could go on and on with praising this book however you have to read it yourself to experience it's greatness.

cover
I like the colours and the look but somehow the guy seems to be a bit misplaced.

final appraisal
A very impressive, thrilling, sexy and romantic book. "The Iron Duke" has everything a great book needs and I would recommend it to all fans of well-written and unique stories. You don't have to be a fantasy fan to enjoy this book, if you like reading about complex characters and a wonderful love story then you should give "The Iron Duke" a try.

I started this yesterday, the first pages confused the hell out of me, but I am liking it now.
Didn't know there is a short story... Guess I'll have to make another stop at my library.

  4. I have been looking at this, but for some reason I didt think Steampunk would have romance or even sex in it. I think I will get it now. Great review.

  5. Laurie, there's definitely romance and sex :) I think Meljean Brook called her books steampunk romance and that fits perfectly.
